I have all these ideas for writing, but don’t know where to start!

This can definitely be very distressing for any writer. Ideas are flying around in your mind, one minute you’re thinking about writing about a macho space cowboys fighting aliens and saving the woman of his dreams, next, you want to write a movie review for Night at the Museum. Next, you’re thinking about writing an article on a basketball, soccer, baseball, or football player. Or you’re jumping to writing an article on the upcoming Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts vs. the Chicago Bears and who will win.

There are hundreds of subjects out there which you can write about. The problem is that you want to write on many of them at the same time.

It happens to all of us. And that’s okay! You should congratulate yourself on having so many ideas already!

“The power of imagination makes us infinite.”
--John Muir

Where should you start?

First, let’s put some order in all of this confusion.

Write down all of your ideas--not taking more than a paragraph or two (a few lines if also fine) to describe the overall idea/plot that you intend to write about for that particular subject.

Look at your top five and decide which one you really want to write about RIGHT NOW.

START WRITING!

Could you write several stories/articles/or reviews at the same time?

There are no rules against writing two different stories/articles/or reviews at the same time. But if you can juggle writing on more than one topic at the same time, then go for it!

However, stick to writing one story/article/or review at a time if you have difficulties multitasking. It will work out best for you to concentrate on one story/article/or review at a time so that you can write it from start to finish without getting mixed up with other pieces of your writing.

“We cannot do everything at once, but we can do something at once.”
--Calvin Coolidge

Should you not write because you have too many ideas?

ABOSLUTELY NOT!!!!!

You’ve got ideas? GREAT! Start writing!

“The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at a time.”
--Richard Cech

Taking the above quote, apply it to your writing. Think of it as you are writing and discipline yourself to finishing the one idea that you decided to write about. Don’t skip around multiple pieces of writing unless you are comfortable doing so.

To your success as a writer!
