I worked Hunter on some directional training. I then threw him a distraction during a retreive to make sure that he would respond to my whistle to ignore the distraction I threw during a retreive. I also threw him a few blinds.

all labs like water. it’s in their nature. you just have to introduce him correctly. he’ll do it. good luck

the dog heels on the right because the owner is obviously left handed…

For the people talking about having the dog heel on the right side, and it being a problem. If you watch the video the guy points with his left hand throws bumbers with his left hand so my guess he also carries his gun with his left hand and you always want your dog to be on the opposite side of your gun i.e. the RIGHT SIDE.

I just finished “water dog” and am working on another retriever book. I’ll be training myself, and you are doing a great job. Standing in front and sending to the duck you want is a very clear signal to the dog, I’ll be doing some of the same. Great vid

listen buddy every one has there own techniques in training he has his own and obviously you have your own his must work for him
July 30th, 2010 at 14:13
I’ll do that if you want to swim out there to retreive our ducks this year.

Horrible job. Technique couldnt be more wrong. If I were you, I would shoot the dog and start from scratch with a new one. If your gonna do something then ya need to do it right. You should be ashamed of yourself.

man youre the sh#$%$%$%T REALLY GOOD JOB

Going to the last dropped duck? I think your the fucking moron come on. That is not a true statement at all have you even trained a dog. Another question why does the dog have to heel to the right? It doesn’t matter just has to be the same side. I think this guy did a great job training this dog.

Also it doesn’t matter what side the dog heels to as long as it’s the same side all of the time thats more important than left or right.

Very very good job training this dog. Looks to me like he is 9 months or younger. The only thing I would do differently is to not train this long every time. Also you should pick up half of the dokkens yourself and teach the dog that retrieving is a reward and after watching this vid it’s probably been done he is a very patient dog and obviously well trained. I was impressed when you threw the distraction dokken out when he was just about at the original mark then a whistle to correct him.

Thanks man. I took him out on my first hunt and limited out on Teal in about 1.5 hrs. People were shooting all around us at The Great Salt Plains in Jet, OK. He did good, but didn’t focus as well as 1 on 1 training during his first hunt. I’ve taken him out about 20 times now this year and he is catching on quickly. While in the blind he’s watching the sky for birds now. I’m trying to get a video put together of me and friends duck hunting this season. Good luck to yourself

Your doing a great job training Hunter, if your happy with how he is doing, and it works for you, then disregard thsome of these rude comments. If you would like some suggestions, Please let me know, I would be more then glad to point some things out. Otherwise, happy hunting.

That is an awful pompeous attitude you have scofo35!If he shoots left handed then he is doing fine. This is not training for a trials dog,so any training that gets the dog to do what you want is good training. The pup looks happy. Next time you make a comment like like yours make sure it is in the proper context. If this were a trials dog, then you may have some validity. But for a man and his dog, who just want to hunt, then he is on the right track. by the way, I do Train Dogs.

Well obviously your background in training hunting dogs is also limited. He may be a left handed shooter and would then have his dog heel to the right, which would make that the correct side to heel to. There is no hard and fast rules to if a dog should go after the last bumper tossed. If it is a young dog, then that is what you do to increase succes. But later in training, the dog should go to wherever you cast it, blind, visible or whatever. I think he is doing good by adding distractions.

That dog is great. He’s looking for a hunting dog that’ll fetch up some birds and looks like exactly what he’s got.

July 30th, 2010 at 19:41
haha he told you scofo you dumb bitch.
July 30th, 2010 at 20:04
Thanks for the advise. I’m left handed you moron, that’s why he is on my right. I don’t do this for a living, and I must not be an EXPERT LIKE YOU. It’s simply a hobby of mine, and I enjoy the companionship with my dog.
I’m getting pretty excited for duck season. I now have him running multiples, and delivering to hand. I hope that this is acceptable to a pro like you.
Good luck this year!
