Palm counters the debut of 3G iPhone by launching Palm Treo

Palm is one of the companies that envy the attention that the 3G iPhone is getting for the last couple of days. The 3G iPhone had its debut last Friday (July 11) and to counter the big leap made by Apple Inc., Palm Inc. has launched its latest mobile device called Treo 800w last Monday (July 14). Palm is also hoping that they will challenge the dominance of Research in Motion’s BlackBerry among corporate users. But analysts say that it might be a wrong move for Palm as it fell in the shadow of 3G iPhone’s debut.

The Palm Treo 800w can be availed for as much as $250. Customers must signup with Palm’s carrier partner, Sprint, for a service contract and a $100 rebate. The lowest second-generation iPhone is still cheaper compared to Palm Treo 800w. The 8 GB can be purchased for as low as $199 and must sign a contract with AT&T that would last for two years.
According to Lawrence Harris, an analyst from CL King and Associates, even though other mobile companies were selling new phones in a cheaper price than the 3G iPhone, the Palm still decided to price Treo with a whopping $249.99 along with a two-year contract with Sprint. As of the moment, Palm Treo 800w is the most expensive smartphone offered by the wireless carrier.
