Today, let's meet Teedra Moses, an R&B singer originally from New Orleans, Louisiana but now living in Altadena, California. Teedra was born to gospel singing mom Shirley Moses. She moved to Los Angeles, California after her parents' divorce. While Teeedra had always wanted to record music, she spent her early years working as an assistant wardrobe stylist for artists such as Will Smith, Kelis, R. Kelly, and No Doubt. It was after breaking her leg on a video set that she ultimately decided to follow her heart and begin making music.
Following this epiphany, Teedra signed with TVT Records and in August 2004 she released her debut album,
Complex Simplicity, which was executive produced by herself and partner Poli Paul . The album peaked at #158 on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart, #10 on the Top Heatseekers chart and reached #11 on the Top Independent Albums chart.
Teedra has also written songs for other artists including Nivea, Christina Milian, and Mary J. Blige. She was featured on two songs from Raphael Saadiq's 2004 album
Ray Ray. Her songs have been showcased on
Noah's Arc, a Logo network television series, as well as the hit HBO television series
Entourage.
Though Teedra would describe her vocal sound as urban, she brought a little bit of her mother's gospel fervor to her own vocal style when she began singing professionally. The final song on her debut album, "I Think of You (Shirley's Song)", is dedicated to her late mother.
Teedra is currently recording tracks for her second album,
The Young Lioness, which is scheduled to be released next year.
Teedra is the mother of twin boys Ras and Taj; their father is rapper Ras Kass.
