DisneyShopping, 10/12 — Email Exclusive: Take 20% Off Sitewide & Share with a Friend
One of the questions that the Email Experience Council received for its Wall of Questions for DMA07 was whether you should budget for viral list growth. In a day or two you’ll be able to see all the answers to that question and all the other questions we received on the
EEC’s blog, but after seeing this email I couldn’t help but leak part of my answer to that question. Simply putting a send-to-a-friend link in your emails will get you a little pass-along—perhaps 1% to 2%—but if you really want to stoke viral growth you have to prompt readers to forward the email in the body of some of your emails. Although this DisneyShopping email doesn’t use send-to-a-friend functionality, which means that they won’t be able to track how many times the email is forwarded, they do make it very clear in the body of the email that they want readers to pass this email along. This kind of prompting should boost your pass-along rate significantly. And just like SmartBargains did in an Oct. 5 email (see
Oct. 8 AM Inbox), DisneyShopping included an additional send-to-a-friend prompt in the subject line. Again, stay tuned for the full answer to this question and others on the
EEC’s blog.
Circuit City, 10/14 — Blowout sale—plus another chance to win instantly
Circuit City has redesigned the header of their emails, opting for a slimmer design. This is surely in response to the increasing use of preview panes. Wasting too much space on your logo and navigation bar can push a lot of your content below the preview pane fold and reduce engagement.
Here’s the new, more compact header…
…and here’s the old header:
