AM Inbox: Green is a traditional Christmas color

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

REI, 11/27 — REI: Give Green this Year
Although not quite as big bang as TigerDirect’s Pink Friday campaign, REI tries some social responsibility messaging to motivate shoppers to pull the trigger. Back on Blog Action Day I bemoaned that retailers were missing the eco-friendly bandwagon. Since then, I’ve seen emails from Brookstone, Norm Thompson, Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue and now REI promoting Earth-friendly products.

EB Games, 11/27 — EB Games Weekly Newsletter 11.27.07
EB Games quietly announces the launch of their GameStop Blog. I didn’t see any links to it on EB Games’ homepage but there was one on GameStop’s homepage. It appears that the blog was launched on Oct. 24, but this is the first time they’ve mentioned in their newsletter.

Saks Fifth Avenue, 11/27 — Saks Lights Up Fifth Avenue
Video gives retailers a great opportunity to capture in-store moments and beam them out to online shoppers to make them feel more connected to the store experience, even if there are no stores near them. In-store fashion shows, product demonstrations, project clinics, etc. are all candidates. In this email, Saks includes a video highlighting the unveiling of their Christmas window displays and the lighting of their flagship store’s exterior.

CB2, 11/27 — modern mistletoe
This is a very eye-catching design, but an email highlighting less than 7 bucks worth of merchandise seems a little risky to me. But if it gets people clicking and exploring the rest of what they have to offer or gets them to come into a store, then the payoff is there. Any thoughts on whether an email should highlight merchandise worth some threshold amount?
