Wal-Mart, 4/23 — Digital Gifts for Mom
Wal-Mart uses a nice bit of animation in this Mother's Day email, adding some visual appeal by demonstrating how a digital photo frame can cycle through pictures. As the subject line suggests, this email focuses on digital gifts.

Then later in the day, Wal-Mart followed up with this email which focuses on more traditional gifts. Wal-Mart usually only sends one email a week, so it’s pretty usual for them to send two—and I’ve never seen them send two in a single day, which makes me believe that this is an A/B test that went slightly awry. The fact that two products are promoted in both emails supports that conclusion.
Orvis, 4/23 — Move outside with Orvis Summer Home
In this email, Orvis gives subscribers a sneak peek at its Summer Home catalog and highlights some of the new products in the catalog. For those subscribers that aren’t on their catalog mailing list, Orvis tries to use this email to solicit sign ups.
