AM Inbox: Calls-to-action becoming more creative

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

SmartBargains, 10/9 — Egyptian cotton sheet closeout. 2-day special price.
I’ve definitely seen retailers paying more attention to their calls-to-action and being more creative and compelling. In this email, SmartBargains uses a nice, little pun for their call-to-action. If you’ve seen any great calls-to-action in recent retail emails, let me know.

J. Jill — Another great reason to shop with us! Free shipping!
Since it was a little slow today I pulled out this re-engagement email from J. Jill that I received a few weeks ago. I have mixed feelings about re-engagement emails from multichannel retailers. My question is always: How do you know that I’m not shopping at your stores? For online-only retailers, re-engagement emails make a lot more sense to me, because you can be much more certain about subscribers’ shopping activity (but you still won’t be able to correlate my wife’s shopping activities to the emails I receive and pass along to her). For multichannel retailers, I would look more at subscriber engagement (open rates, clickthroughs, etc.) than subscriber purchases when determining whether to re-engage them.

Office Depot, 10/9 — We Celebrate, You Save
Office Depot is celebrating its birthday, but they are also calling out Boss’s Day, and giving folks a little history lesson as to how it started. This is a great holiday for the office supply retailers to jump on. FTD also mentioned Boss’s Day yesterday (see Scanner below).
