AM Inbox: Cabela's launches product promotion RSS feed

The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

Cabela’s, 7/5 — Email Exclusive Sale @ Cabelas.com
Following in the footsteps of CompUSA, eBags and others, Cabela’s has launched a product promotion RSS feed and promotes it in this email. Strangely, Cabela’s rejects the iconic orange RSS icon in favor of a more square-ish yellow one of their own design. I don’t see the advantage of doing that. One thing that I do like is that they put it in the left-hand rail under their department navigation, which is where they typically promote their other channels and other points of engagements, such as their stores, catalogs and credit card. While Cabela’s offers only one feed, retailers like CompUSA offer feeds for individual product categories and for their broadcast email newsletters. The RSS movement is still nascent, but more marketers are starting to explore it.

A couple of weeks ago I talked about 7 tactics for driving traffic to stores with email. Well, here’s a good example of email driving traffic online when stores are not an option. In this email, Circuit City lets subscribers know that their stores will be closing at 6pm on July 4, but that their website is standing by to fulfill their orders. We’ll see retailers using this strategy again on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
